December 14, 2006
Japan-based telecom KDDI and Russia-based telecom Rostelcom have signed a cooperative agreement based on their existing partnership in Japan. Under the tie-up, they will construct a fiber-optic network with two 900km cables connecting Joetsu in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, with Nakhodka, Russia. The construction, which will be wholly implemented by Japanese NEC, is expected to kick off by mid 2007, and be completed by March 2008, with KDDI and Rostelecom equally sharing the costs of five billion Yen (US$42.6 million; US$1 = 117.5 Yen).
